Seriously, you want to raise revenues really quickly? Stop giving married people a big fucking tax break.
According to Obama’s site, this is how my taxes are effected under the two parties as a single individual:

So my one-income household is being penalized for not participating in a bullshit state-sanctioned institution?
Don’t even get me started on what “freelancers” pay for the luxury to work for themselves.

Re: freelancers, though: the current system is bullshit. If one person gives you money, they have to pay half your taxes! But if a lot of people do, you get to pay them, hooray!
For the record, though, I think the premise of giving couples (who are presumably having kids, buying real estate, etc.) a break isn’t a bad idea — but taxes at their baseline should be fair for everyone.

I knew I should have clarified the kid thing: there are plenty of marrieds who don’t have kids or own real estate, and plenty of unmarrieds (coupled and single) who have kids and real estate, so shouldn’t the system reflect the actual financial responsibilities rather than the perceived ones? I think so.
